Making Hand Block Print (Ajrakh & Bagh) & Hand Embroidery & Applique
The beautiful piece would remind you of an afternoon spent on a patio sipping mint tea while escaping the hustle and bustle of the city. The hand-chiseled tiled walls of a riad in Marrakech are highlighted by intricate latticework and vibrant decor. Geometric patterns on the walls and fish-scale patterned Turkish tile work of the hammam are mirrored on this silk scarf.
Hand block printing is a beautiful art that was employed to stamp fish scale patterns on silk using wooden blocks. Fragments of bagh and ajrakh printed silk have been used to add interesting design details. The process of bagh printing is characterized by hand-printed relief prints with naturally sourced pigments and dyes. Ajrakh printing is an arduous process that requires a number of stages of printing and washing the fabric repeatedly, using traditional colors that symbolize nature. The piece traveled from a little garden blooming with flowers to a quaint village nestled behind a sand dune, during the process of its making. It took two months to complete the handmade silk scarf.
